Render Painting in Newcastle

Tulip Decor paint rendered walls across Newcastle, covering smooth, sand-faced, K-Rend, and lime render on all exterior elevations.
What we cover:
- Smooth and fine-textured rendered walls — colour refresh or change
- Hairline crack filling and surface repairs before painting
- Biological growth treatment on shaded elevations
- K-Rend and polymer render: compatible coatings available
- Lime render on period properties: breathable coatings only
Newcastle’s inter-war semis in Fenham, Blakelaw, and Denton Burn, and post-war properties across Kenton and Cowgate, are widely rendered. Rendered walls need repainting roughly every five to ten years. The trigger is usually visible: green algae, surface staining, cracking, or faded colour.

Smooth and Fine-Textured Render
Smooth render is the most common exterior finish on UK homes built between the 1920s and 1990s. It takes a standard masonry brush or roller well and gives a clean, even finish when properly prepared.
The most common reasons for repainting are fading, biological staining, and colour change. A change from a dated off-white to a warm stone or contemporary grey is one of the most cost-effective transformations available for a rendered house.
Hairline Cracks and Surface Repairs
Hairline cracking is normal in rendered walls — it develops as the building moves with temperature and moisture cycles. Left untreated before painting, cracks allow water behind the render and accelerate failure.
We fill hairline cracks with a flexible exterior filler or sealant before any primer or paint is applied. Larger or structural cracks are assessed on site; if significant render repair is needed, we advise on this before quoting.
Biological Growth Treatment
North and east-facing rendered elevations are particularly prone to algae, moss, and lichen across Newcastle’s high-rainfall climate — especially north-facing elevations in Fenham and Elswick. Painting over active growth without treatment causes the new coat to fail quickly.
We apply a mould treatment, allow it to work, and pressure wash the surface before priming. This eliminates growth at the root rather than sealing it beneath the paint.
K-Rend and Polymer Render Systems
K-Rend and other polymer render systems are modern thin-coat renders, common on properties built from the 2000s onwards in Ponteland, Wideopen, and Gosforth. They are typically coloured in the mix and can be painted when the colour has faded or a different tone is wanted.
Paint compatibility varies by product. We check the existing render type and use an appropriate masonry paint system — not all products work on modern polymer renders without testing adhesion first.
Lime Render on Period Properties
Lime render is found on pre-1919 properties: Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Jesmond, Heaton, and Byker. It is breathable and flexible by nature. Standard masonry paint traps moisture, accelerating cracking and causing paint failure.
We use vapour-permeable (breathable) coatings on lime render. If there is any uncertainty about the render type, we assess before quoting.
Our Render Painting Process
1. Survey
We assess the render type (smooth, K-Rend, lime, or roughcast) and check for cracks, biological growth, and surface condition.
2. Pressure Washing
The entire surface is cleaned to remove algae, moss, dirt, and loose material.
3. Mould Treatment
Where biological growth is present, a treatment is applied and left to work before rinsing.
4. Crack Filling
Hairline cracks are filled with flexible exterior filler or sealant.
5. Masking
Windows, frames, sills, and adjacent surfaces are protected.
6. Paint Application
A primer is applied where needed, followed by two finish coats of breathable masonry paint.

Render Painting Costs in Newcastle
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 0191 743 3614 for a fixed quote.
Typical Ranges
A 3-bed terraced house with rendered front only typically costs £500–£850. A 3-bed semi with all rendered elevations runs from £950 to £1,700. A 4-bed detached fully rendered property costs from £1,500 to £2,600.
What Drives the Price
Three things determine the final cost: surface condition (cracks, biological growth), render type (standard vs lime vs K-Rend), and number of coats needed. Scaffold tower rental is typically needed for two-storey properties.
Combining with Other Exterior Work
Render painting is often combined with a full exterior painting project — windows, fascias, and soffits done at the same visit. See also our masonry painting service for brick and stone surfaces.
